The emergence of optical disc storage technology with high density and long lifetime is a great event in information science and technology. Nowadays the high storage density optical discs are the key devices for data storage at the dawn of a full-scale multimedia age. The new storage media are still the bottleneck in high-density optical storage. It is an important task to search for new optical recording media with high performance and explore new preparation approaches to obtain high quality recording film. A series of organic materials for optical storage have been studied for a long time, but only a few of them have been in practice. For example cyanine dyes, phthalocyanine dyes and azo dyes.Compared with other information storage materials, azo dyes have moderate stability. When a metal ion was introduced into azo group to form chelate, the stability of azo dyes was improved. Their remarkable thermal and chemical stability make them attractive materials for high-density recordable optical disc. In addition azo dyes are promising candidates for rewritable optical disc media for their tran-cis photoismerization. Azo dyes have the great potential as the reversible optical storage materials and holographic storage materials. In recent years more and more people began to study azo dyes and witnessed a huge development. The thesis includes four parts:Part I: ReviewThe development history of the optical information storage materials and the three kinds of organic materials (cyanine dyes, phthalocyanine dyes and azo dyes) were introduced. Especially principles and requirements of the azo dyes as high density storage materials, rewritable storage materials and holographic storage materials were introduced.Part II: The study of 5-Br-PADAP and its metal-azo dyes as information recording materialsWe synthesized the Zn, Co, Cu, Ni metal chelates of the 5-Br-PADAP and investigated their optical properties and thermal properties after spin-coated them on the k9 glass using UV absorption spectrophotometer, themo-ravimimetry (TG) and...
