According to the communication theory, noise exists in the process of communication, which prevents information from transmitting efficiently and fails to realize the purpose of communication. At present, China has no advantage in international communication because on the one hand, English serves as the international language used to communicate, on the other hand, the information of China's foreign promotion is not originally English. Chinese-English translation is the common practice. Reports on China carried in China's English media heavily rely on Chinese-English translation.Editing translation of soft news is generally adopted in China's foreign promotion, which lacks theoretical backup. German school of functionalist translation views translating as a purposeful activity and has a systematic framework of theory to guide translating activity. By taking examples from China Today, this thesis makes a theoretical analysis of the edited-translation of soft news, in an attempt to give explanation of this specific translation activity.
