Instant Messaging applications have been widely accepted and used since it showed up market in 1998. Instant Messaging System became popular to masses with the introduction of the ICQ(I Seek You) system. It allows end users to communicate with each other in real time through Internet. It has proven itself to be a feasible technology not only to fun-loving people but to the world of commerce and trade, where quick responses to messages are crucial. With the Internet's coming up, Instant Messaging provides even more thorough service. In the future, Instant Messaging applications will combine Email and file service together, and become a new notion of networking communication tool.Mobile Instant Message originated from the successful conjunction of two applications in telecom industry: Internet based desktop Instant Messaging and Mobile Wireless Terminal. Users want to communicate with his/her friends in mobile device as conveniently as in desktop based Instant Message and get more personalized service, it is doubtless that wireless instant message shall be easily able to easily gain the huge market. The key point is how to seamlessly combine Instant Messaging and wireless together and develop a wireless based instant message system.This project will discuss today's Instant message protocol and current wireless platform technology. And will bring up a J2ME based development platform and GPRS network Jabber instant message which can be used by a variety of device. The purpose of this study is how to design and develop instant message system.At first, this article focuses on the analysis and discussion of some issues about the instant message deployed on wireless, and then explains the instant message protocol, system modules, and multimedia information process. Second, considering low bandwidth and high delay on wireless communication environment, to fully make use of bandwidth and increase system efficiency, it is necessary to compress the message content which is transmitted over GPRS. Hence, a compress algorithm will be introduced. Finally, the structure and the implementation of mobile wireless based multimedia instant message will be covered.
