The access net is the window of the entire telecommunication network, and is called as 'the last mile'. A Passive Optical Net (PON), all the users of which have access to the equipments on line, with transparent business and simple upgrading, makes use of the bandwidth of fiber as much as possible. Optical power splitter is the core of PON. On the other hand, because of the advantage of being easy integrated with the system of the optical waveguide devices, they are more and more significantly used in the telecommunication network. This thesis is reported the research on Multi-Mode Interference (MMI) 1×8 optical power splitter on the material silica-on silicon.In this thesis, all aspects of optical waveguide based on silicon are systematically described such as how to classify the waveguides, how to make SiO2 layer and how to shape the SiO2. Also the history, development and the current status of MMI are involved. Meanwhile we analyze in theory the advantages of MMI devices compared with the general optical devices. They are more robust, more compact, easy manufacturing and easy integration in large scale. With broader bandwidth and being not sensitive to polarization, MMI devices are adapt to DWDM telecommunication network. With the guidance of classical theory, 1×8 optical power splitter on material silica-on silicon of various parameters and variables is designed by BPM(Beam Propagation Method) waveguide design software. All the simulation results are concluded for orderliness in the period of designing. And then a lot of analyzing work in theory is done, including analyzing the optical field of this device, the relation between index of material and width of MMI part. At the last part of this thesis, relative laboratory work is reported.
