A novel detecting method of the oil in waste water which is based on the laser and optical fiber is proposed in this paper to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional detecting methods such as low accuracy, strict operating conditions, weak ability to fit the surroundings and to meet the demands of the petrochemistry and environment monitor. This method is characterized with wide measuring range, high accuracy, light weight, compact size, easy to install and adaptable to the surroundings. A kind of high accurate optical fiber sensor that is based on the absorption principle of the light is developed and utilized to realize the on-line measurement of the oil in waste water. The single chip microcomputer 8751 is used to process and control signal which includes signal conditioning, data acquisition, indication, printing and output of the control signal. In addition, the experimental facility which can deal with the oil concentration from 0 to 1000 mg/l is developed to simulate the spot process. Furthermore, a mathematical model of optical absorption is built up by theoretical analysis, uncertainty analysis is also included in this paper. The research result shows that the detecting method of the oil in waste water which is based on the laser and optical fiber is feasible. The novel method helps in the environment monitor and in the scientific management for waste water discharge and water reuse in the petrochemistry so it has a good social effect and huge potential economic benefits.
