With the high-speed development of computer network and multimedia technology, image is playing a more and more important role in human's daily life and work. Image, as the result of human vision sensation, is the most important information source for human to realize the world. Now, image has become the most important data type in the field of multimedia technology. Because of the great amount of data and information in image, it is necessary to compress the image data in order to adapt to the practical application demand. The redundancy of statistic, structure and vision in image provides the possibility to image compress. Image Code is a developing field on image compress and a lot of methods on that has now generated, such as statistic coding, transform coding, predict coding, vector quantization code, neural networks code, fractal code etc. Using parallel computing can improve image coding efficiency, and it is a new research field.This paper introduces the image coding technology and its application. First, basic parallel computing knowledge will be introduced, such as parallel computer architecture, software environment of parallel computing, design technology and capability evaluation of parallel algorithm; Secondly, the basic image coding knowledge including basic image coding theory ,common methods of image coding and International standard of image coding. Then, the theory of vector quantization and classic LBG is discussed. After summarizing the defects of the LBG algorithm, the author implemented a LBG improved fast algorithm based on simulated annealing. The high performance is verified with the experimentation. A parallel algorithm of the improved algorithm is analysed. The author analyses the advantages and the disadvantages of the parallel algorithms. Lastly we study the actual application of the image coding technology. On the one hand, design and implementation of the audio-video compression system based on MPEG-4 is introduced. This system is very good comparing with the other compressing systems. It can provide users with many functions, but its price is very cheap. On the other hand the parallelism of MPEG-4 video coding is discussed.
