With the rapid development of IP technology and Internet, the demand on data traffics is getting greater and greater, even exceeding traditional voice traffics. Until now, Mobile IP is the only standard to support Internet host mobility. Compared with complex wireless cell networks, the mobility management and handoff in mobile IP is very simple. Moreover, Mobile IP support roam among different networks, too. Because of triangle route and handoff delay, however, Mobile IP hardly supports real-time services and hardly fits micro-mobility environment. Therefore, it is necessary to find out a way to improve handoff performance, which is also the topic of the dissertation. At the first beginning, the concepts and main components of mobile IPv4 and mobile IPv6 are presented. Then three improved micro-mobility protocols of mobile IP are discussed, and the key technologies are analyzed.Secondly, the dissertation probes into the QoS of Mobile IP handoff. An extended RSVP scheme for wireless mobile network is put forward on the base of fixed network-oriented RSVP. The scheme uses mobility predication and passive reservation to make advanced reservation of wireless resource in a set of cells where mobile node will soon enter, and uses control scheme for wireless access network handoff to increase the probability of successful handoff.Thirdly, considering about the influence of wireless link to TCP performance, the dissertation discusses the features of wireless link, compares three different mechanisms that proposed to enhance TCP performance in wireless networks. On these comparisons, a recommendation is brought out that is to use Snoop technique to improve TCP performance in the process of mobile IP handoff with smooth handoff and quick resend. Finally, the simulations of Mobile IP handoff performance with NS are introduced. A scheme of Mobile IP handoff, based on hierarchical mobility and mobility prediction techniques, is also recommended, which can provide QoS guarantees and better handoff performance.
