The main objective if this paper is to design and construct a plant root configuration analysis experimental hardware system based on computer vision, and develop the corresponding image processing and recognition algorithms suitable for plant root configuration analysis. Based on this goal, the following research achievements have been fulfilled:Some fast image preprocessing methods suitable for plant root including image smoothing, enhancement were determined through investigations and experiments. And applying two value morphology to acquire thinning image, being convenient for gaining some characteristic parameters. A new edge detection method with higher resistance to noise was developed-Wavelet Transform.Through integration of techniques including root phototonus, optics imaging and electric-mechanics, an experimental system for plant root image fast acquisition and procession was developed. It consists of outer machine (for example marking handle, transparent tube) , imaging system, illuminating system, processing system. Test shows that the system is a viable approach for more practical product development.Using Visual C++, the software system for plant root configuration parameter have been developed. To verify the effectiveness of the developed software and hardware system, experiments for detecting root configuration were conducted. The results of experiment show that the approach is effective for detecting root configuration parameter and is accurate. The preprocessing time by microcomputer(Model Legend PIII 800) is 50ms. The detecting root configuration parameter time is 340ms.This research points out a new approach for further development of detecting plant root configuration parameter system. It is of significant for botany. And it is of great effect on the development of agriculture and forest.
