Trunk orthosis is a kind of instrument that prevents and rectifies malformation in human bodies, and cures diseases in bone joints,muscles and nerves. Also it partly compensates for the functions of the disabled muscles. In this article, methods of researching and designing a trunk orthosis CAD system are discussed.Firstly, this paper presents both internal aad native situation of orthosis producing, and then the status of native requirement of orthosis is put forward:since China has the largest population in the world, it also has the largest number of the disabled persons who need the help of orthosis; moreover, if people who are suffering from the pains of lumbar or cervix want to keep their acting abilities of the ill joints, they will need to use orthosis. Computer aided design makes it possible to produce more suitable and functional orthosis, and it also saves the producing cost and designing time.In addition, this article analyzes the structure of trunk orthosis CAD system, and discusses the functions and how to realize those functions of each part According to the aspect of human body, surface modeling is used to build the three-domain trunk model; and then through OpenGL technique, the model is displayed on the computer screen; then by involving the technology of man-machine interacting, the model can be edited according to the respective body characteristics of different patients-as the improvement of man-machine interactive technology, model can be edited more freely. The core cogent ef designing such a CAD system is model display and interactive model edition, while through the CAD and interacting technology, more suitable orthosis can be made.
