With many advantages, such as convenience and high efficiency, computer simulation of optical fiber communication systems has been an important means for system design, evaluation of feasibilities and development of new system. This paper is focused on the research of computer simulation techniques of optical communication systems. Based on the analysis of the system characteristics, we have developed an applicable simulation software using the programming language C++ and applied it to system performance evaluation and transmission characteristic study successfully.The paper has built a set of models of the components in optical communication systems, such as laser, modular, mutiplexer, demutiplexer, EDFA, fiber, receiver, and so on. Modeling takes account of various effects in high speed systems especially in WDM(Wavelength Division Mutiplex) system, such as dispersion and non-linearity effect happened in channels.An applicable simulation software is developed and an experiment platform for system performance evaluation and research is built by using the models mentioned above. The simulation program can also display signal waveforms, generate eye diagrams and give the bit error rate (BER). Some obtained results showed close agreement between the simulation and actual performance.Further, the paper use Language Borland C++ Builder designing the interface and the software can make it possible for users to construct their the systems in the light of their own demands freely. The component library can be expended easily because of the use of OOP(Orientation Object Programming) method.
