The optical fiber communication technology is a subject to be concerned, and photonic crystal fiber(PCF) is thought to be one of the most promising technology in this field. Microstructured polymer optical fiber(MPOF) has potential values in final 100 m~1000 m optical fiber communication systems because of inheriting the merits of both polymer optical fiber(POF) and PCF. And it had been proved that the MPOF has several remarkable optical properties different from the traditional fibers, such as the endlessly single mode and the anomalous dispersion; Then, the fabricating techniques are much easier than silica PCF. All these offer the potential of fabricating MPOF with specific functionality.Based on the study of a great number of references, this paper introduces the achievements and developments of POF, PCF, MPOF and finite difference beam propagation method(FD-BPM), respectively. Firstly, FD-BPM is introduced in detail, including its principle, formulas, numerical method and boundary conditions. From Maxwell's equations, the vectorial and scalar wave equations for 3D, 2D and 1D are given out one by one using the slowly varying envelope approximation. Especially, the perfectly matched layers(PML) boundary condition is introduced into FD-BPM and corresponding modified form is given out. Secondly, the unusual features of PCFs are analyzed, including the guiding principles of light in the fiber, endlessly single-mode characteristic, dispersions, bending losses and equivalent radius. Finally, six new kind structures of MPOFs are presented and analyzed approximatively using average-index model.Because of the limitation of the experimental conditions, it is very regrettable that we can't fulfill the MPOFs designed in this paper. It is sincerely that will extend progress continuously in the future researches and experiments.
