As the development of the technology of multimedia and Internet, there are increasing demands in image processing area, especially in some peculiar applications. The image compression technology based on region of interest utilizes different compression to different area in an image, it can solve the contradiction between the image quality and the compression rate.In the paper, first, the research background and development of image processing are introduced; then an algorithm utilizes integer-to-integer wavelet transform, Maxshift and SPIHT is brought forward. Wavelet transform is first step, after that, you can choose the region of interest; encoder drives the mask which marks the important coefficients; then, shifts the important coefficients; last , codes all the coefficients.In this paper the algorithm with it's betterment and the experimental results are presented. Experimental results show that the algorithm can make roi has better quality than background.
