If using internet to carry speech services, the expenses of long distance communication is cut down to a great extent. The bandwidth is a principal factor that makes the speech quality bad. It is also the most difficult problem to be resolved for the internet. People is always searching speech coding methods of lower speed and higher speech quality. In 1996, the international telecommunication union approved an 8kbit/s speech coding standard G.729 based on CS-ACELP algorithm. For its high quality ,medium complexity and low delay, it is already used in some facilities and applications, such as VOIP Gate, IP telephone and internet telephone.In this paper, the background knowledge of speech coding ,the theory and development is firstly introduced, then G.729 standard and appendix a is analyzed systematically. The key techniques is expound in detail. Next TMS320C6000 DSP chip is introduced and some methods used to optimizing G.729 according to the architecture of the DSP core is recommended. The optimized G.729 speech codec is tested by all the ITU Test sequences and has accomplished the request. At last the approach to the real time implementation of G.729 speech codec using TMS320C6211 DSK is studied and achieved.
