Software engineering plays an important role in software development. Software test puts through whole process of software engineering and guarantees software quality.Testing is often a labor-intensive undertaking. Manual test efforts tend to find the bulk of errors toward the end of the release cycle or during beta testing, where they are more expensive to fix. In addition to its high costs, manual test is unpopular, and often poorly executed. Automated test does well in these respects and promotes the efficiency of software test and makes it economic. Manual test cannot substitute for automated test, vice versa.This paper briefly introduces the terms and characters of software test automation, compares the difference of manual test and automated test, points out the correlations and roles of them in test, analyses the restriction of automated test. From point of view of test process, script language, test suite structure and continued automated test technique, the paper researches automated test and concludes the general processes and methods of automated test which is given detailed narration and explanation.At last, this paper gives comparatively complete automated test case based on the general process and method of automated test. The tested software is ESBCalc4.2, while test tool is Rational Robot and test script language is SQABasic. The test includes test case, test example, test script and results of test, especially refers to the creation, execution, verification and optimization of test script.
