Cluster system is extensive applied in various fields of high performance application because of its advantage of high cost performance and good scalability. With the increasing of I/O-intensive applications on cluster system has come on demand for high performance I/O system. But the performance of I/O system lagged behind the CPU, memory and network components because of the impact mechanism component of I/O system. I/O system has become the bottleneck for cluster system. The thesis attempt relieving the problem that the I/O performance bottleneck for cluster system with the network RAM technology. This paper beginning with a brief introduce of related background knowledge. Then study the hierarchy and the bottleneck for performance of traditional memory system, and analyses the advantages and the primary using fields of network RAM, and discuss the key problem of using network RAM as a remote memory paging system.Further, for the purpose of practice, we implement a simulated cluster system with the remote memory paging system using the trace-driven simulation method. We evaluate the impact of traditional disk swap device and the remote memory paging system for cluster system by configuration simulation with various parameters and analyses the impact of different network bandwidth and application environment for remote memory paging system. The result of simulation indicate that using network RAM as a remote memory paging system can significantly improvement the performance of Cluster system. At last, we implement a prototype of remote memory paging system on MOSIX cluster and measure its performance by a simple test application.
