As a major direction of image processing, image compression get abroad application in the fields of Internet, Communication, Printing, Biomedical etc. With the development of modern science, the ratio of image compression isn't the only object, such as the protection of color information in image compression, in order to meet to the need of the fields which have a high demand of exactly copy of color image.In this thesis, we proposed a algorithm of color image compression having the function of color protection. The strategy of this algorithm of image compression contain three parts: the first is the choice of color space, we select appropriate color space under the principle that in the new space the image energy is centralized on light component and on the two chroma component the image energy is placed well-proportioned; second is wavelet transform, the thesis select the wavelet function and the Pyramid image decompress style, during the procession of image edges, we use the method of symmetry extension. The last is coding of wavelet coefficient, in this part, we design CIM coder, which is the joint coding scheme for color images using a merged color tree structure which maintain the spatial relationships among the color components.In the performance analysis of CIM coder, image quality is measured objectively, using peak signal-to-noise ratio, mean color error and color error's mean square error. A comparison with JPEG is given, the result displays the good result the performance ofcolor protection, up to the aim of the thesis.
