In recent years, virtual reality technology has been an active research area. And virtual environment is an important part of virtual reality because of its interaction, immersion and imagination. It helps people to enter virtual reality world created by computer directly to control the production and development of an event in a brand-new man-machine interactive mode. It brings people actual feel with multidimensional information space. The creation of virtual environment model is the key of virtual reality system. It is necessary to establish virtual reality environment in the process of furniture design. Virtual environment brings people an actual, vivid and inactive furniture exhibit room and provides an actual scene to furniture designer. This thesis refers to some research work based on a virtual reality subsystem in FCADS, an item developed by Chongqing University and Guangming Group. Firstly, combined with the characteristics and developing trend of the modern furniture manufacturing, this thesis analyzes the requirements for virtual environment in furniture manufacturing and proposes to establish virtual environment in the process of furniture design. Secondly, based on the basic theory of virtual reality technology and combined with the characteristics and requirements of indoor designing and furniture manufacturing., this thesis researches into the way of developing and designing the virtual environment and proposes to develop and design virtual environment by object-oriented technology and agent-oriented technology. Thirdly, this thesis researches into every link of virtual environment modeling. It analyzes the modeling theory and ways of the three links of geometric modeling, physical modeling and behavior modeling. Aiming at the requirements of virtual environment for real time display and quick image generation, it proposes to optimize virtual environmental model by dividing levels of detail model and to improve the algorithm by visibility computation and multi-resolution models in order to increase the response speed between system and user. Finally, this thesis expatiates on the design thought of the system, the effective way of modeling and implementation by using the foregoing research findings and taking indoor virtual environment modeling in furniture designing as the example.
