With the mathematics curriculum reform, curriculum standard has proposed a basic philosophy of reflecting the cultural value of mathematics for the first time. Teaching requirement is being made for mathematics culture separately. There is a growing awareness of the powerful value function of mathematical culture. Probability and statistics contains great cultural value. Exploiting this cultural value helps to develop the potential of mathematics classroom and to realize the concept of new curriculum. Therefore, mathematics education is truly to train and develop people.This paper is divided into four chapters:Chapter 1, based on a large number of relevant literatures, this paper starts with three concepts, the knowledge of value, the value of mathematics and the cultural value of mathematics. The concept of the cultural values of mathematics is well defined, which derives that the essence of educational value is exactly the cultural value of education. Then from a theoretical point of view, the theoretical basis for exploiting the cultural value, humanism theory, quality education theory and STS education theory, is described. Finally, the theoretical basis of the cultural value of probability and statistics in new curriculum standard is derived.Chapter 2, from the theoretical point of culture element, exploiting the cultural value is equivalent to exploiting the culture element. Then this paper analyzes five culture elements of probability and statistics, instrumental value, spiritual value, thinking value, way of thinking value, culture allusions and aesthetic value. How teaching materials reflect these cultural values is also presented.Chapter 3, a famous probability problem, Marilyn's cars and goats, is described. By exploiting the mathematical cultural value of Marilyn problem as well as a questionnaire survey of high school students, college students, first-line teachers, we find that cultural value has not been given sufficient attention in the current mathematics teaching in high schools.Chapter 4, focused on the phenomenon and problems existing in the education, some suggestions about how to achieve the cultural value of probability and statistics are proposed.This paper seeks to provide advices on exploiting the cultural value of new curriculum mathematics textbooks. By analyzing phenomenon and problems existing in the education of probability and statistics, this paper hopes that mathematical cultural value can been given sufficient attention in high school classroom and first-line teachers can explore and continuously improve mathematics teaching of cultural value of probability and statistics in high schools.
