Atpresent, shortage of funds is a principal question during the development of colleges and universities in China. The resource for higher education in China is mainly from government, tuition and donation of enterprises and society, in which depends heavily upon government. However, it is difficult to keep up with the development of higher education as a result of college expansion, which needs more funds; thus, government input alone is far from enough, which inevitably to urge universities to raise funds from multiple sources. For colleges and universities in American, social donation is of importance and propels them forward. Therefore, analysis on the donation in American universities and its influence and function to their development is valuable and significant in theory and reality.This paper first introduced the concept of donation and the meaning for universites to develop donations:and then analyzed the historical development of donation and its types, operation and use:etc in American universities; use case analysis to analyze the influence factors of donation in American universities; Further expounded the operation of donation of American colleges and universities:concluded the experience and the existing problems in donation of American universities; at last:based on the current state of donation in the universities of China; compared with that in America, and learn the experience of America: and then put forward some constructive suggestions for donation job to learn in our universities.By comparison, the donation system in China is far behind that in American, still has a space for promotion. Rebuilding of social donation culture, policy support of government and constant endeavor of the universities are necessary for the promotion.
