Regarded as a useful skill, autonomous learning has a profound effect on students'further development. Recently, autonomous learning has become the focus of international language researchers'attention. It has become the primary aim of the contemporary foreign language teaching system. In the domestic, the research of English autonomous learning was started at 1990s. The New English Curriculum Standard has clearly indicated that: cultivating students'autonomous learning ability is one of English teaching's primary purposes. Thus it can be seen, how to instruct the high school students to study independently has already become the teachers'priority mission. Whereas, the current high school English teaching still taking the teacher as the center of the teaching activity and neglecting the student's main body position. Such traditional language teaching system is detrimental to students'comprehensive ability and it is also against the new educational reform's original intention which is promoting students'autonomous ability. Hence, developing students'autonomous learning ability is extremely urgent.The author firstly introduced the background of learner autonomy. This part includes the past develop history and the present research situation and then expounded the connotation of the autonomous learning. The author also summed up the factors that can affect the development of autonomous learning ability via researching domestic and international documents. By using literature researching, questionnaire asking and face to face interviewing, this thesis analyzed the current high school students'self study situation qualitatively and quantitatively. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the high school students'current situation of learner autonomy and to analyze the problem existed in the process of autonomous learning. For the sake of improving the present English teaching, the author will bring forward several proposals.The author hope this article can provide some effective methods to the English teachers. Besides, the author also wishes other subjects'teachers can be inspired as well.
