References play an important role in essays, because they reflect, among other things, researcher's attitude, reading experience, and information collection capability. Therefore, taking references as the object of my study is a meaningful consideration. In this dissertation, references from the following seven journals were considered as the core object of the study: The Journal of Jiangsu Higher Education, The Journal of Higher Education, The Journal of Higher Education Exploration, Modern University Education, The China Higher Education Research Journal, The Journal of Research in Higher Education of Engineering and The China University Teaching Journal. Several conclusions, as summarized below, were arrived at during this study:Firstly, ideas, theories, and models of higher education in China were found to be greatly influenced by those in America and Britain. On the one hand, we the Chinese usually acquire more experiences or draw more lessons from American and British research achievements. Some researchers either fail to completely understand these English education documents owing to limited English language skills, or rush to apply them without first considering their relevance to the Chinese context. On the other hand, however, these ideas, theories, and models of higher education in China are shown to be less influenced by those of Japan and Germany.Secondly, citation statistics (including self-citation) indicate that china's higher education study was affected by many experts, like Cai Yuanpei, Pan Maoyuan, Gu Mingyuan and Zhu Xi. Foreign scholars like Clark,B.R. Brubacher, J.S. and Newman,J.H. are shown to have great influence on the China's higher education study also.Thirdly, influences from research works also exist. According to statistics, higher education study in China are strongly affected by local works like The Works of Cai Yuanpei, The Works of Deng Xiaoping, as well as those of foreign works like Clark,B.R.'s The Higher Education System: Academic organization in cross-national Perspective , Newman, J.H.'s The Idea of a University, and Brubacher, J.S.'s On the Philosophy of Higher Education.Fourthly, foreign higher education theories are usually misunderstood here in China, especially Clark,B.R.'s theory of the triangle rights relationship among government, marketing, and academy, Trow , Martin.'s theory of Massive higher education, in which he divides the higher education into elite, mass and universal, and Ashby,E.'s theory of Environment and heredity. He argues that university is a product of an environment and it's heredity. Ashby points out that attention should be paid to the powers of environment and heredity when establish universities, which offers the necessary reference for us to construct world first-class universities in China.
