Nowadays, India has been playing an important role on the stage of international politics and economy with its economy developing rapidly. One of the important factors is that more and more eminent engineers have been cultivated in India and their quantity and quality have been on the top of the world. Not only do they contribute a lot to the development of the Indian economy, but they spread across the world .Moreover, most of the outstanding engineers are "IITs", who graduated from the Indian Institutes of Technology which is the best engineering university in India. It has a history no more than fifty years old without magnificent buildings while their graduates are very excellent. What makes Indian Institutes of Technology excellent engineering universities? Why do more and more excellent graduates come from Indian Institutes of Technology? This dissertation will introduce IIT's characteristics on the basis of the analysis of the rising Indian higher engineering education with the hope of being the new reference of the professional development of the engineer education in China.Hence, the thesis includes five parts: introduction, analyses of Indian higher engineering education, the studies of Indian Institutes of Technology, the characteristics of Indian Institutes of Technology, the problems in Indian Institutes of Technology and their measures and the conclusion. In the beginning, the introduction part states the origin of the paper and status in quo of this field. In this part, the features of this paper, its innovation and research methods are presented. Chapter 1 mainly studies the development of Indian higher engineering education. This part divides the development of Indian higher engineering education as two parts: before Indian independence and after its independence. Chapter 2 will explore the development of Indian Institutes of Technology and mainly study the reason why IIT has been developing so quickly. Chapter 3 will study the characteristics of IITs from four aspects: administration, faculty, curriculum system and curriculum quality assurance system. Chapter 4 will analyse the problems in Indian Institutes of Technology: brain drain and shortage of faculty. This chapter will also state the measures that the government has taken. In the end, this paper will provide the illumination from Indian higher engineering education which may be helpful to our engineering education.
