The thesis makes a deep study of the significance of teaching poems depending on the status of teaching poems in high schools. It combines"structuralism"and"people-centered"theory with practical ways of teaching poems, going deep into the practical teaching strategies in high schools, with the purpose of putting what has been researched together to help improve one's teaching in future.The thesis firstly deals with the development and reformation of traditional ways of teaching poems. Then it puts emphasis on the important role of teaching poems in high school in inheriting national culture and promoting essential-quality-oriented education. Afterwards it mainly concerns the analysis of the status of teaching poems in high schools nowadays as well as the problems that lie in them, thus providing bases for the thesis and forming an original teaching concept, that is, laying the foundation of development of life for all students with the idea of"student-oriented".The fourth part covers the relationship between students and teachers in the teaching process, the teaching strategies and teaching resources. Then it summarizes five practical teaching methods, namely reading aloud and reciting, understanding the writer and background knowledge, appreciating, teaching the theme and using multi-media, followed by large quantities of examples in teaching poems to help prove their feasibility and effectiveness. The conclusion deals with what to do to improve the teaching of poems in high schools.
