Along with basic educational reform development, the curriculum standards of Chinese compulsory education is renewing. The symbol sense has become an important work in Chinese curriculum standards of compulsory education. Founding and developing students'symbol sense is a crucial aim of mathematical education. The crucial sign of students'mathematical attainment is founding symbol sense, developing symbol sense is the requirement of cultivating talents with creative spirit and practical ability. But the symbol sense has not been paid great attention.The symbol sense of 7, 8 and 9 grade's students has been investigated through self-compiling test. In studying, the writer mainly analyzing the following questions: (1) How is the junior middle school students'development condition of symbol sense? (2)Is the age and gender play a role in symbol sense of junior middle school students?(3) Is the junior middle students'symbol sense related to mathematic result?According to studying result, the junior middle school students'ability of symbol sense isn't satisfied. The results indicate that:(1) With the grade increase, the students'ability of symbol sense is raising obviously, this indicate that the mathematical education promote the development of symbol sense, but most student are accustomed to using mathematical sign by rote and lack ability of that choosing and using correct sign to solve practical problems. Using sign express quantity relationship is the weak among the five components of number sense. So the component should enhance in practical mathematical teaching. (2) The students of three grades have no sexual significant difference in symbol sense, and the five components have no sexual significant difference. (3) The symbol sense has significant difference in mathematical result.So teachers should enhance the interpretation of symbols and explanation of symbolic language in the process of teaching mathematics, and teachers should rectify the wrong in understanding of symbols. At the same time, teachers should foster students' ability of choosing appropriate mathematical symbols to solve problems and flexibly using of symbols to accurately computing, and teachers should develop the judging sense of the accuracy of symbolic operation. In a word, these proposals can help students construct mathematical knowledge and strengthen students'symbol sense.
