Both of America and China have started the new education reform since 1980s, and the curriculum reform is the most important part. They do not have the same curriculum standard coming from the federal government in the US; therefore, the English Language Arts performance standard in Georgia's high schools was designed by the education act from federal government and the education facts in the state. On the other hand, every province uses the same Chinese Language Arts curriculum standard coming from the Centre government in China. Yet two of them reflect the new education concepts in the new era. This thesis examines the English Language Arts performance standard in Georgia's high schools and Chinese Language Arts curriculum standard as examples, comparing the curriculum theory, curriculum goal, curriculum contents, textbooks and curriculum evaluation between them, in order to indentify the differences and to contribute to education reform in China.Chapterâ… begins with the curriculum theories both from Georgia and China. Even the two curriculum theories are almost the same, the differences still exist. Both of them believe that language arts instruction should be intergrate and exoteric, and the Chinese one seems like more abstract.Chapterâ…¡introduces the curriculum goals which are the core of the curriculum standard. They are the guide of designing curriculum and they play an important role in the reform process. There are differences between the two curriculum goals. Both of them know the critical parts in the high school, but the Georgia standard is more detail and easy to follow.Chapterâ…¢focus on the curriculum contents of the standard. It compares these two contents in terms of reading part, writing part and speaking part. The standard of Georgia is more detail.Chapterâ…£analyzes the textbooks used in Georgia and China according to the principles of designing and the features. They both focus on reading and writing, but the organization of Georgia standard is better; moreover, the articles in the textbook are more useful.Chapterâ…¤discusses the assessment principles and methods and finds out the similarities and differences. The goals of them both are to improve the students' literacy, and the assessment subject including students, teachers, friends and parents, and there are lots of way to assess. Yet the way to get into the college is different between Georgia and China.
