Service learning in American universities and colleges is a teaching strategy with its distinguishing feathers. It connects the students' community service with their academic study. In the project, Students apply knowledge in the real world and learn from reflecting of their own experience, and they will grow up to responsible and capable person in the process of caring for others and societies.Since the 1990s, service learning , as an effective method for civivc education , has recognized by more and more scholars.At present, It has become a common task for our scholars to learn from Service learning in American universities and colleges to enhance practice teaching's effect in our country .This thesis,based on the foregoing researches, attempts to probe into service learning in civic education of American universities and colleges from theroy to practice. With the title of"Research on Service Learning in Civic Education of American Higher Education", thesis is divided into four parts.The first part briefly introduces the related researches on the topic of service learning in America and defines the concept of service learning and civic education.The second part analyses the history and development of service learning as a method of civic education in American universities and colleges, and explore the theory base and practice base of the development of service learning as a method of civic education.The third part puts forth a comparatively thorough introduction and analysis on the service learning's course as a method of civic education in American universities and colleges.It includes the organization, implementation, characters and effect of service learning as a method of civic education. In order to illustrate the course ,a case about the topic is used .The forth part compares our practice teaching of ideological political theory education in universitie with service learning in civic edcation of American universities and colleges,analyses the use of service learning to practice teaching of ideological political theory education , and puts forward suggestion from three aspects: students'station,reflection in the practice teaching and evaluation for practice teaching.
