Culture is a product of history. Teach er culture develops and takes form in the process of human history. Teacher culture is a kind of culture with special nature. It is created by teacher group, and in turn it creates teacher group. Teacher culture is a main part of school culture ecology, the mainstream culture of school and in a dominating position. It affects students all the way and from every aspect. It directly affects the relationship between teachers and students, and affects educational quality through the relationship between teachers and students. Therefore, the study on teacher culture must come before promoting teacher development and educational reform.During the history of China and western countries, their teacher culture show different cultural character and track of development due to influence of different historical tradition.According to the study of a Japanese scholar, western study on teacher culture can be divided into three stages. Among these studies, the study of a Canadian educationist, Hargreaves, is the most classic one. Hargreaves divides teacher culture into four types, individualism, balkanization, contrived collegiality, collaboration. These four types of teacher culture relate and affect each other, and form their own characteristics. They differ in degree of development instead of being good or bad.Study on teacher culture of Chinese scholars can be roughly divided into two stages. By studying and analyzing recent domestic studies on teacher culture, the academe achieve a lot in terms of teacher culture definition, the basic way of developing teacher culture, how to build up teacher culture in the new curriculum reform. However, these studies are confined to individualism and cooperative culture, and there is much room for study on balkanization.So this thesis focuses mainly on teacher culture of balkanization with the aim of providing certain basis and reference. The logic way of thought of this thesis is culture, teacher culture and teacher culture of balkanization. This thesis starts with the definition of teacher culture, and teacher groups, and teacher culture of balkanization. Secondly, on the basis of definition and comparing domestic and overseas studies, this thesis analyzes the features of teacher culture of balkanization and its form of representation. Thirdly, this thesis explores the reason of the forming of teacher culture of balkanization from three angles of view, namely individual angle, organizational angle and social angle. Fourthly, this thesis analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of teacher culture of balkanization in a dialectic way. Fifthly, the thesis ends up with principles and strategies for modifying teacher culture of balkanization. Finally, overlooking the thesis as a whole, the author thinks the best attitude towards modifying teacher culture of balkanization should be cautious and dialectic, and comes up with the solution of teacher culture of balkanization, appealing to cooperative culture.
