This thesis researches the use of compilations of literary writings as teaching material for language teaching in middle schools. It is in three parts: the format of this kind of teaching material; the function of the constituent sections within each language teaching material; and how these sections are related to each other within such material. The thesis attempts to analyze and understand the scientific theory behind the compilation of these teaching materials and provide theoretical support for the compilations of the language teaching materials.The first part discusses the format of such teaching materials. It looks at historical research. It brings together existing theories about these teaching materials. It concludes that the four main sections making up the format of these compilations of literary writings are: literary writings carefully chosen for inclusion; study guide; language practice; knowledge base.The second part discusses the function of the constituent sections within each language teaching material. This is the key point of this thesis. From an analysis of Chinese and other foreign language compilations of literary writings for teaching purposes, a summary of the different functions of the constituent sections within a book is derived. The functions are: The writings chosen for inclusion are for transmitting information and cultural differences; the study guide provides guidance to the literature and its language; the language practice section provides the teacher with feedback to the students' progress; the knowledge base expands students' views beyond their immediate environment.The third part discusses the inter-relationships between the sections in a book of literary writings. Using the choice of literary writings as a foundation, the thesis analyzes the relationship of this function to other sections within the book. It also discusses the inter-relationship between the different sections themselves.In conclusion this research has analyzed the theory behind compilations of literary writings for language teaching purposes and has pointed out the deficiencies of the present language teaching materials. It's expected that this thesis can do help to improve the present situation of the compilations of language teaching material.
