A Study On Cultivating Students' English Independent Reading Ability In A Senior High School

The present thesis aims at training students to learn many kinds of reading methods, develop reading strategies and form independent reading habits. According to the"students-focused"idea, by emphasizing the function of reading, arousing students'reading interests, broadening students'horizons, enriching reading materials and organizing a wide range of activities, I try to increase students'abilities of independent reading. As a matter of fact, the enhancement of language ability not only depends on classroom teaching, but also rely on large amounts of out-class independent reading. Speaking of English independent theories, though great achievements have been made abroad and it is employed in the domestic teaching practice, it is not widely carried out and it especially remains backward in the field of English teaching practice at home. When I studied the domestic and international independent theory, successful experience and teaching patterns, we know that cultivating independent reading ability is necessary and even urgent. In order to increase student'independent reading ability, I help to cultivate the students'motivation and interest, arouse their enthusiasm in learning and build an efficient teaching pattern. It is our duty to foster students'capability of independent reading and lay a solid foundation in their lifelong development. This cultivation is influenced by teachers'educational thoughts, the present development of school and the level of students'quality. As for the evaluation of independent reading, I have made course evaluation and whole evaluation to evaluate reading effects, collected the materials that can show the reading course and results and respected the students'unique personality gap and set up growing record to evaluate the reading effect. At the same time, through various activities, I have guided and checked students'independent reading. Under the wave of educational and teaching reform, it is highly necessary to cultivate independent reading ability, which is a great challenge before us.In a word, when we concretely combine modern learning theories, new curriculum theories and English classroom teaching practice, we put forward the strategies on how to cultivate the ability of independent reading. The strategies are practical when we carry out the new curriculum. We do hope that this thesis can benefit English teachers during the reform in new basic curriculum. We also expect the paper can enlighten other senior high school teachers in other subjects.
