At the end of the 1960s and the beginning of 1970, with the rise and development of Communicative Competence Theory, Systematic Functional Linguistics Approach, and Speech Act Theory, linguists began to view the ultimate goal of language learning is to develop language communicative competence. Many linguists began to view langue not only in terms of its structures, but also in terms of the communicative functions that it performs. The emphases on learner's development of communicative competence had a significant influence on the study of language teaching methodology, and finally lead to a new approach in language teaching---the Communicative Approach. Grammar teaching has always been a critical issue in foreign language teaching, however, the importance and methodologies of the grammar teaching under different Language Teaching Approaches are quite different. This thesis also wants to figure out the attitude of Communicative Approach hold toward grammar teaching and the teaching principle.The forms and functions of language should be focused on simultaneously in the course of language teaching under Communicative Approach. Students should be regarded as the center in the classroom. And language ability should be developed through meaningful language communicative activities. Communicative competence is inseparable from grammar competence, which is a basis of the former one. The grammar teaching under the Communicative Approach refers to the teaching of Functional Grammar, which is an integration of language form, meaning and function. So it requires the students to master both the language usage and language use, and realize the actual use in the real communication.This thesis not only conclude the theoretical foundation of Communicative Approach , but also make an summarizing introduction of the related study of the grammar teaching in this field, such as different teaching modes, methods, principles and so on. Finally this thesis also makes an investigation into the application of the Communicative Approach to the teaching of grammar, summing up the exiting problems and making recommendations. |
