With social progress and the need for the continuous development of education, people are becoming aware that to truly improve the quality of education, teachers must be concerned about the professional growth and development. Because of the special status of English in international exchanges, China's education sector's emphasis on English teaching is increasing and the research on English teachers' professional development has become the focus. Rural high school English teachers' self development especially in the economically backward areas is a more prominent issue.It is necessary to make the research and investigation on rural high school English teachers' self-development especially in the economically backward areas. To study the existing problems of rural high school English teachers' self-development is of important significance to improve the overall level of English teachers and promote the general development of English teaching. It is also of great help to narrow the gap of English educational level between developed areas and economically backward areas and urban and rural areas as well.This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, in which the background, purpose and significance of the investigation, and the research areas and methods are dealt with. The second chapter is about the relevant researches on high school English teachers' professional development. Some concepts related to the research are defined and the theoretical basis and research status at home and abroad are described. The third chapter lists and analyses various factors that affect high school teachers' self-development, mainly form external factors and internal factors. The fourth chapter analyses situation of high school English teachers' self-development by using the data collected from the teachers' questionnaires and interviews. The last chapter is a conclusion of the research, in which the writer not only presents the conclusion of the research according to the analysis of the rural high school English teachers' self-development but also puts forth some suggestions in order to promote rural high school English teachers' self-development.
