The Impact Of Calculators On Students' Computing Skills

《Mathematics Curriculum Standard》point out that, "The development of modern information technology has taken significant influence on the value, object, content as well as teaching method of mathematics education. Mathematics curriculum should attach importance to the utilization of modern information technology, especially the influence calculators and computers may have to the contents and methods of mathematics study. Also we should vigorously develop and provide much richer study resources to students, so as to make modern information technology as a powerful tool for students to study mathematics and solve questions, thus to change students' study way, and enable the students to be glad and have more energy to involve into the real, experimental mathematics activity."《High school Mathematics Curriculum Standard》also emphasize that, "We should pay attention to not only using the information technology to present the curriculum content which it was hard to present in the former classroom teaching, but also the organic conformity of information technology and the curriculum content." The teaching plan requests to use calculators and all kinds of teaching technology platform as common as possible , so as to strengthen the combination of mathematics teaching and information technology.This article will discuss the calculator's influence and function to students' computation ability when it is used in mathematics classes. There exist two viewpoints to the use of calculators in Mathematics teaching. One viewpoint thought the use of calculators has affected students' computation ability. The importance of computation, in mathematics research is self-evident. If we did computation all by calculators, it would definitely lower students' ability of mental arithmetic and ideation.Another viewpoint thought the calculator is an effective tool to help students calculate accurately. Once students know how to use the calculator, it cannot reduce their computation ability, but greatly enhance their accuracy and speed of big number and complex computation; Meanwhile it can stimulate their interest to love science, study science and use science.This article will analyze calculators' influence to students' computation ability through investment to students' computation ability and practical examples of students' computation mistakes. According to the result, some countermeasures are given to solve bad influence.
