The Chinese five millennium civilization has left behind us the deep culture accumulation, from which the traditional sports culture has developed and blossomed. The ethical spirit, the artistic spirit, and the life spirit of the traditional sports culture make it the representative of the oriental sports culture and these spirits reflect the request of the harmonious development of individuals, society and nature. However, China is still at the periphery of the world culture, the influence from the powerful western culture is inevitable, so is the traditional sports culture. The modern sports culture prefers the Western sports and the Olympic Games pattern; therefore, Chinese traditional sports culture has been neglected and even looked down upon.Along with the enhancement of its comprehensive national power, China is paying increasing attention to culture building and trying to seek the cultural status which adapts with its own economic potentiality. Therefore, it's necessary to re-recognize the value of the traditional sports culture, to maintain its excellent parts and to reconstruct it. The number of Chinese folk sports projects is one thousand or so, and the project embodies Chinese national culture, thus developing folk sports project in school sports curriculum teaching will benefit students from two aspects; on the one hand, students may receive the traditional culture education, at the same time, the traditional culture will be inherited and developed; On the other hand, students will master at least one sport item of bodybuilding method to nurture the good habit of lifelong bodybuilding. The new curriculum reform proposed to implement curricula management from three levels: nation, the local and school. The folk sports project may become the teaching material as an important way to develop school sports course.This paper investigated the present situation of the folk sports project development of sports curriculum in the high schools of Henan province, by methods of literature reviews, interview, questionnaire, mathematical statistics and logical analysis. According to the investigation results, at present, the folk sports game and folk sports project are seldom seen in the school sports curriculum; but the students show great interest to the folk sports, most students participate in the folk sports in the school extracurricular activities instead of in the physical education classes. Though promoted by physical teachers, the folk sports appear as class games and supplementary teaching material because physical teachers lack the knowledge on it. In order to develop the folk sports in school physical education, three aspects should be emphasized: teaching staff construction, the exploration and utilization of P.E. fields and equipments resources and the exploitation of the folk sports resources.To advance the process of folk sports project entering the sports curriculum, firstly, the folk sports project has to be transformed and innovated according to the students. And the new folk sports curriculum must conform to the new curriculum idea, and should consider student's interest, life experience, emotion attitude and knowledge requirement; acceptability and practicality; values and training target. Secondly, The teachers'training system ought to be established as soon as possible to enhance P.E. teachers'training, to promote the teacher to renew the education idea, to raise the awareness of folk sports project resources, and to increase the ability of exploiting and utilizing it. The last but not the least, the educational administrative departments and schools will pay enough attention to the compilation of relevant textbooks; will work out the teaching plan and evaluation measures, and try to make the folk sport project the content of textbook.
