On The Construction Of University Spirit In Contemporary China

First of all, the thesis gives a brief introduction to the origin and development of western university and Chinese university. Although they are under vastly different situations and paths during the process of formation and development, the connotation of university spirit includes the spirit of exploration into academic research, the morality of"kindness oriented"and the critical spirit of social guidance. Then, the thesis reviews the reform of Chinese university spirit in history, which is to show the important roles that Chinese university played in history. The functions of it are the essential support of existence of Chinese university, the vital resources of national promotion and the powerful motive force of social development. The necessary introduction and review clarify the historical passing down of the construction of university spirit in contemporary China.In view of different understanding of main contents involved in Chinese university spirit in previous research, the thesis, taking contemporary Chinese reality into consideration, discusses university spirit of contemporary China and its main contents from the perspective of the conflict and requirement between university education and social development. The author believes that the main contents of the spirit should at least contain the concurrent development of science and humanity, the connection of patriotism and affection to school, the combination of tradition and modern times, the echo of being practical and being innovative and some relative aspects. The university spirit of contemporary China functions as guidance and standard, spiritual inspiration, public condensation and social radiation. The main contents, distinctive features and meaning of its functions are the targets of our appeal for the university spirit and its construction.Nowadays, there is growing support and concern about Chinese university spirit that has made great progress. For example, cultural activities on campus are rich and varied. The tendency of development of the university spirit is increasingly definite. The construction of its carrier has been formed. The guarantee system is progressively built up. The theoretical research becomes gradually mature. However, there are many problems exists in the construction of spirit need solving, such as deviation and loss of orientation of value in the university spirit, the phenomenon of"laying stress on form"during the construction and deficient investment. Although there are many causes of the problems, in general, the influence of traditional education concept, the negative impacts from market economy and the masses media respectively are three main negative factors.Therefore, it is necessary to give full play to strong power of the university spirit and probe into the train of thought and strategy involved in the construction of the spirit. Firstly, we need to clarity the meaning of enhancing the construction of the university spirit. Secondly, we should deal well with the relationship between generality and individuality, the relationship between adaptation and transcendence and the relationship among headmaster, teachers and students. Thirdly, we need to take practical and effective measures, which include developing"the Three Doctrines"to grasp correct direction of the construction, reinforcing the guidance on orientation of value to accelerate the formation of system of value, forming the scientific and democratic atmosphere to bring about favorable school spirit, and integrating features of the times to bestow university spirit new characteristics. In conclusion, we should make great efforts to build up the university spirit of contemporary China.
