In senior English teaching, reading is considered to be the most important course, which the teacher and students lay great emphasis on.However, the students' reading ability is still poor although the teachers spend most of their time(as much as 2/3 of their teaching time)on the course and the students do a great amount of practice. One of the main reasons is supposed to lie in the limitations of the traditional reading-teaching approach, which block the improvement of students' reading ability. Theoretical researches and the teaching practice show that the teaching approach based on students' self-access learning(SAL)is a relatively ideal teaching mode. The SAL approach has a positive effect on students' improvement of reading ability. For one thing,it increases students' opportunities to intake more comprehensible, authentic and various language input, making students naturally acquire vocabulary, grammatical ideas, cultural background knowledge and actually improve the students' reading comprehension and speed. For another,it makes students actively engaged in teaching activities, which contributes much to the extension of the 45-minute class into the outslde-class linguistic activities. It is argued that this kind of teaching mode really realizes learner-centeredness in the English-reading class. The writer is of the opinion that the idea of self-access must be incorporated into the English reading-teaching in the senior high school and that in their course-designing and teaching-practice,the teachers should take students' personality and potentiality into full consideration with a view to establishing an appropriate teaching and learning mode of optimizing students, thus helping the students(?)ective learning strategies and improve self-access learning ability. The thesis consists of the following six chapters:Chapter One is Introduction. It presents the main idea, the study purpose and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two reviews the brief history of the researches in self-access learning and the relevant theoretical issues that are closely associated with the research of the thesis.Chapter Three deals with the reading teaching in high schools.Chapter Four discusses SAL approach in the high school reading class.Chapter Five deals with findings and analysis.Chapter Six draws the conclusions of the whole research.
