Based on schema,reading and context theories,this paper is concerned with the question of how reading comprehension can be facilitated with the creation of class language situation context in reading teachingA preliminary reading of the relevant literature reveals that reading,one part of language teaching to understand and gain knowledge,is the most important of the four language skills in the teaching and learning English as a foreign language. Comprehension takes place in a certain context which plays a guide line role in activating the readers' known cognitive knowledge.Schema theory indicates that once readers' schema is made alive,the known knowledge is easily linked with the new one and the information of text and the writer's intention are quickly understood.Therefore,in English reading teaching,to create a class language situation context as stares or bridges can help to make up the students' schema gap so as to promote their comprehension of the text and improve their abilities of verbal interaction,comprehension and critical thinking.But most of the previous researches on context in English reading teaching have been conducted,mainly focused on vocabulary context in the comprehension of words,phrases and sentences or on class context in lead in before reading a passage,seldom concerning the creation of class language situation context in while-and post-reading.An experiment was carried out for four months in two classes in Grade One in (?)uqing No.1 Middle School,with the respective number 46 students participating in the study,one class as the experimental group while the other as the controlled one.Data were obtained from questionnaires of English reading problems,pretest and posttest about the creation of class language situation context in English reading teaching.After experiment,the researcher analyzed the probability of such instruction in Senior English Reading after dealing with the experimental data by SPSS 14.0.The results suggested that students' reading comprehension could be significantly facilitated through the creation of class language situation context in reading teaching,since the experimental group outperformed the control group statistically.Based on the experiment,some tips are also offered.
