Medium language, as an important parameter in the foreign language pedagogy, is the language used in the classroom teaching by teachers. It mainly contains the mother tongue and the target language. It has been a controversial issue in the foreign language teaching that which language should be used as the medium language.In the past two decades, a trend of limiting the use of the mother tongue has been in vogue, thinking that the mother tongue only makes a negative influence on the foreign language learning. However, as a matter of fact, the outcomes of English teaching in high school are not so satisfying as expected. Especially for the English teaching in the junior high school, is English as the only medium language feasible? Is that really good for the students'language learning?Therefore, the thesis introduces the related research of medium language at home and abroad systematically. And it also makes an experiment and a survey to the using of medium language in the English classroom teaching. On this basis, the thesis makes recommendations of how to use the medium languages properly in the English classroom teaching and points out the importance of mother tongue in the junior high school English teaching.The thesis consists of three chapters:Chapter one is the literature review. It illustrates the contents of medium language: its definition, the views on medium language in pedagogy, the function of target language and mother tongue as medium language and the theoretical bases of medium language.Chapter two is an experiment and a survey. It makes an experiment on the application of different medium languages in junior high school. And then there is a survey to the students in the control class and the experimental class after the final examination. Since that, through collecting and analyzing the data, there is a discussion to the results.Chapter three is the suggestion and inspiration part. To the problems in application of medium language, the thesis draws a conclusion of two parts: enhancing the teachers'modes of thought and the occasions of using the mother tongue.
