This research looks into the relationship between learning strategies and learning proficiency. In this study, the subjects are senior 3 students (n = 210 ) from Honder International School. The instrument used in this research is questionnaire designed to learn about the situation in which the subjects use learning strategies and the NMET scores, which the students gain in June 2006. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) is used to measure the results of the language learning strategies, and English learning proficiency is determined by NMET. In order to prove the relationship between learning strategies and learning proficiency, Pearson Correlation Coefficient has been used in this research. The paper includes the results of the analysis as well as some suggestions about what kind of strategies should be used frequently to improve learning proficiency. Relationship has been found in the use of metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social/affective strategies among the subjects at the three different proficient levels: low, medium and high. According to the results, many suggestions have been given to help students improve their English learning by using proper learning strategies.
