As the base of writing and reading,the teaching of word learning is the most important content of Chinese teaching in primary schools and also key point of Chinese teaching for low grades. There are more than thirty influential experiments in word learning reform only since the founding of People's Republic of China. In Chinese Curriculum Criterion for Compulsory Education (Probation), the teaching of"character learning and character writing"has been regarded as one of the five fields in Chinese Teaching, which puts further emphasis on the foundation status of the teaching of word learning. Accordingly, improving the ability to learn words autonomously can lead pupils to autonomous word learning in their favorite way. Forming good habits in Chinese learning is a demand for fulfilling new goal in primary Chinese teaching and the basic approach to advance pupils'development. The final goal is to channel their potential in word learning that devotes to enlarge their reading quantities.This paper analyzes the present situation of word learning in primary Chinese teaching and the factors affect pupils'abilities to learn words autonomously through modern educational theory as well as my own work experiences. Recognizing the problems in primary education, it tries combining character regulations to pupils'cognitive regulations to look for more word-learning teaching techniques. It also requires teachers to arouse pupils'interest, encourage their eager to learn words, help them increase word quantities according to their capabilities and train their abilities to learn words autonomously. At last,"teaching is for not teaching."aims at telling pupils how to learn words so as to improve their cognition abilities.
