Various studies have found that language learning strategies are strongly related to achievements in language learning. Vocabulary is the base for one's language level and the fundamental part of language, no matter what language one is learning. Vocabulary Learning strategies also attract more and more attention. As for Chinese senior school students, vocabulary is a big problem in their study. Therefore senior students'vocabulary learning strategies are a question that deserves exploring.In order to understand better the current situation of students'vocabulary learning beliefs and vocabulary learning strategies in the author's high school, a small-scale questionnaire is used with the author's own students will be the subjects. Furthermore, the results are analyzed and discussed. The results are as follows:Firstly, high school students believe that words should be learned with various methods and that words should be learned by using and studying. While they also hold a view that words can be learned in isolation.Secondly, high school students use a very small number of vocabulary learning strategies,Thirdly, they believe that most of the strategies are helpful.Fourthly,"Guessing intelligently","Centering your learning"and"Practicing"are the most used strategies, While"Employing action","Receiving and sending messages"and"Empathizing with others"are the least used strategies.Fifthly,"Practicing""Guessing intelligently"and"Centering your learning"are the most helpful strategies, while"Employing action","Taking your emotional temperature"and"Overcoming limitations in speaking"are the least helpful strategies.Sixthly, there is agreement as well as disagreement between the usage and helpfulness of the strategies.Based on analysis, the paper provides some suggestion for high school vocabulary learning. Such as helping students to see the value in applying various methods during their learning; introducing and using proper learning strategies in class; helping students to develop strong sense of control of their vocabulary learning and so on.There are four chapters in this paper.Chapter One provides a brief introduction that states the background, the purpose and the framework of the paper. Chapter Two reviews the major theories and the related researches about language learning strategies and vocabulary learning strategies.Chapter Three presents the Investigation on students'vocabulary learning strategies in high school. It lays out the method adopted in this study, the purpose of the questionnaire, the description of the subjects, the data collection and analysis. Firstly, the students'opinions and overall pattern of vocabulary learning are explored. Secondly, the most and the least used and helpful strategies are talked about .Thirdly, a comparison between the usage and helpfulness of the learning strategies is made. Finally, the standard deviation is discussed.Chapter Four is the conclusion part of the study. It summarizes the findings of the study and gives some suggestions for the future English vocabulary learning in senior high schools. |
