In traditional English assessment, final assessment is the only criteria to evaluate students.It emphasizes more on the score and baffles students' full development badly.To the shortcomings of the traditionl evaluation, elementary school English new curricular standard offers a new notion: that's the combination of formative assessment and final assessment, but emphasizing more on formative assesment. New English curricular standard points out in the basic notion: Formative assessment dominates in English teaching. Teachers must pay attention to the cultivate and inspire students' positivity and confidence. Formative assesment evaluates students' learning process.It offers students a chance to incessant selfly improve . It emphasizes on students' self-evaluaton and mutual evaluation. Students make progress by self -thought in the course of self evaluation.This paper discusses about the main aspects of formative assessment: class participation and portfolio assessment system. The classroom learning is the key to English learning. Teachers should carry out formative assessment in the classroom.One main point of formative assessment is students' participating in the class activities.Portfolio assessment system is the field that lots of educators and teachers focus on.Compared with the paper test and other evaluation systems, portfolio assessment system can offer abundant information to teachers,parents and students themselves which can indicate what the students know,what they want and what they can do. The biggst merit of portfolio assessment system is that it provides teachers many main information about students' learning and development that other assessment system can't provide.The study selects Shenzhen two key elementary schools. From the research of questionnaires, interviews and analysis, we can see that the new type of developmental education evaluation has great life-force in practice. At the same time we can also find some problems.Summarizing experience, solving problems are the final aims of the research.
