The present society is now at an era of"exploding knowledge", and knowledge renewal is becoming faster and faster with the cycling becoming shorter and shorter. While in the future society, the students'competition and development potential are largely dependant on their self study ability. In the meantime, the cultivating goal of vocational colleges decides such a fact that their class knowledge is not enough for the self development, which requires us teachers to actively probe the relevant theories, strategies and measures on self study cultivation in the practice of teaching, caring for their study process and improving their self study ability with orientation of students'development, in order to lay a solid foundation for their future continual and efficient study and provide a security for their personal success.This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is foreword, which expounds the necessity and feasibility of the cultivation of students'self study ability. This part first states necessity of the self study ability cultivation from the objective requirement of the society, cultivation goals of vocational colleges and their need of personal individual success; then analyzes the feasibility of the students'self study ability and concludes that it is possible.The second part states the theoretic foundation. Firstly, it defines the connotations of such concepts as self study and self study ability; then states and comments on the three theoretic foundations supporting self study: humanistic theory, constructionist theory and theory on zone of proximal development. The core of humanistic theory is"having students as the center", which means to create for the students appropriate study environment and enable them to actively accomplish their study task by themselves, making them the true main body of study. Constructionist theory emphasizes the relativity and dynamics, regarding the study activity as processes of the active choice, treatment, and obtaining of knowledge by the learner, and advocating that teachers are helpers and promoters for the students'meaning construction and"teaching and learning mutually promoting". Besides, it analyzes the internal and external factors influencing self study, with the internal factors including students'self sense of ability, imputation, setting of goals, self supervision and self study strategies, and the external factors including mainly teachers'educational views and the students'study environment.The third part focuses on the survey of the students'present study picture and analysis. The precondition of improving the students'self study ability is the understanding and mastering of their present study situation. In order to achieve this, I have designed"Questionnaire on self study"having five sections of study motive, study strategies, self supervision and study atmosphere and teacher-students relationship, and carried out the investigation with Chemistry and Machinery & Electronics classes of 2006 grade in Dongying Vocational College. The results show such deficiencies as vague awareness, lack of study motive and scientific and systematic study strategies, low self supervision, and inefficient atmosphere.The fourth part deals with the cultivation measures of self study. Based on the results of the above investigation, I put forward the corresponding implementation measures as follows: 1) promote the students to generate the motive"I wish to study", and maneuver their activeness and initiative through four aspects including self sense of ability, correct imputation, learning to set goals for study and inspire interest in study; 2) reinforce the guidance and cultivation of students'study strategy to make them"know how to study", and draw different study strategies appropriate to the students to guide their self study; 3) cultivate the students'meta-cognitive ability to make them"willing to study". The promotion of students'meta-cognition is through improving of awareness, enrichment of knowledge, arousing of the experience and reinforcing of supervision. 4) create efficient self study environment to make them"interested in study". Creation of equal, democratic and free atmosphere of study and establishment of good teaching-learning inter-personal relationship is the necessary external condition for the self study, therefore, the teacher should fully trust and respect the students, attention cooperation and communication, leave the students more freedom in order to secure their happy self study.The fifth part concludes the cultivation result and airs further consideration. The execution of cultivation measures and the results of self-made questionnaire show that most of the students'study attitudes have changed, interest risen, good study habits formed, and self study ability greatly improved. At the end of this paper, I make a preliminary study on textbooks, teaching management, appraisal, asynchronism, etc. existing in self study ability for a future probe and settlement.
