Language learning research has shifted its attention from teaching to learning in the early of 1970s, for people engaged in language learning have come to realize that language acquisition is a cognitive process in which the factors of the language learner himself plays a decitive role in the successful mastery of a foreign language. Among the factors of learner himself the learning strategies undoubtedly plays very important role. The primary learners and the low proficient learners particularly need strategies training. As we all know that vocabulary is an essential component for language building, and listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating cannot do without it. It is proved that acquiring a large quantity of vocabularies is of great importance in the successful foreign language learning.Through investigation and interview this thesis points out that the students in Secondary Vocational School thinks that the vocabulary is the most difficult in English learning and the strategies they use most are rote learning, doing practice and consulting the dictionary, which is of low efficiency. As a result, some students have lost confidence in English, and some students are eager to change their rote learning methods, and they also want to learn English well. The only learning method taught by teachers is to memorize new words as much as they can, so that they have to find out how to memorize the vocabulary and how to use some learning strategies. However , few teachers teach them how to do it, which is neither economic nor scientific. Although the rote learning is widely used, it is against with the English scores. Therefore it is necessary to teach them how to use effective vocabulary learning strategies.The paper draws a conclusion that fostering various and effective vocabulary learning strategies for the students is bound to improve their English competence. What's more, the author has summarized a variety of vocabulary learning strategies suitable for the students of the Secondary Vocational School, such as the memorizing strategies, the word formation strategies and so on.At last the essay proposes some suggestions available for the English vocabulary teaching of the Secondary Vocational School and hopes that it will instruct the English teaching of Secondary Vocational School at present. The paper emphasizes that teachers in Secondary Vocational School are supposed to change their traditional teaching way and foster students to learn to use effective English vocabulary learning strategies as soon as possible, which is of great significance in our English teaching. The paper points out its disadvantages as well.
