This paper includes two parts. The first part contains the summary of metaphorical theory, psychological mechanism of metaphor in application & thinking and the functions of metaphor. The second part describes the inspiration of metaphor on Chinese teaching in middle school.Metaphor falls into the category of rhetoric since the Aristotle's time . Metaphor we live by published by Lakoff and Johnson in 1980 indicated the full start research of cognitive metaphor. They proposed that metaphor was a way of thinking, not only existed in linguistic but also penetrated in thinking and life. Metaphorical thinking is one of the important methods for us to know the world and the diversifying our language. There was no specific conception for metaphor in China early time, the conception of"Biyu"in Chinese literature covers the meaning of metaphor.Application and thinking of Metaphor is closely related to psychological mechanism, such as association , imagination, analogy ,Synaesthesia and ect . Association is the psychological basis of metaphorical thinking , metaphor understanding is a kind of imaginary experience. Transferring Analogy plays a role in the process of studying and solving new emerged problems. Synaesthesia is the general idea for metaphor in psychology .Metaphor has the function of rhetoric , cognition and culture. The function of metaphor in rhetoric can make the language concise, vivid , and novel and full of inspiration, elegance and euphemism. The function of metaphor in cognition has the greatest inspiration in present Chinese teaching. Metaphor, first of all, is an approach to know the world. It allows us to know the world from different aspects; The main function of metaphor is understanding new concepts. The most of abstract conceptions is constructed by metaphor on the basis of experience ; Metaphor can create new significance and express new thinking.
