English textbooks are the primary resource for English curriculums. They play a vital role in teaching English courses. However, even though most of them are compiled by experts, they are not suitable for every education situation due to inherent and unavoidable limitations. Thus when utilizing English textbooks, teachers must adapt and streamline the books' content to better match their students' aptitude and satisfy their specific learning needs. This dissertation researches into processes to effectively adapt English textbooks, using Oxford English (Shanghai Edition) as an example. It also discusses the successful experiences of front-line teachers at Jing'an District in Shanghai implementing these processes, some of the deficiencies and difficulties found, and offers some practical guidance for front-line teachers to implement in future.This dissertation starts with a brief introduction of the basic role and function of English textbooks. It is followed by the theoretical analysis of English textbook adaptation. Then it introduces methods to carry out the adaptation of Oxford English (Shanghai Edition) through the implementation experiences of front-line teachers in Shanghai Jing'an District. And it concludes with a post-mortem analysis and reflection and provides guidance and suggestions for the future.The dissertation is divided into the following four chapters:Chapter One focuses on the concept and essence, and how to look critically at the role, function and limitations of English textbooks so as to make them serve English teaching better.Chapter Two introduces related theories, first by recapping the research history of English textbook adaptations, and then establishes and analyzes the concepts, essences, conditions and tasks of English textbook adaptation.Chapter Three is the core of the dissertation. It establishes in depth how adapting the textbooks -- Oxford English (Shanghai Edition) was implemented by English teachers in Jing'an District, Shanghai.
