It is well known that the professional development of teachers has been a trend of international teacher education as well as a hot issue of the current basic educational innovation in China. Since the English curriculum for Senior High School published in 2003 has set higher standards for English teachers of senior high schools across China, English teacher education has really become the focus of attention. As a result, the professional development of English teachers has attracted even more attention. Meanwhile, it is necessary and important for high school English teachers to professionalize themselves so as to reach their reach their goals in life, namely, to be expert teachers.Based on literature, the questionnaire on excellent high school English teachers of Wuxi City District and the case study of two expert teachers, my thesis, which consists of four chapters, summarizes the characteristics of expert teachers, analyzes the difference between those excellent teachers and expert teachers, seeks the factors in influencing English teachers' professional development and concludes effective approaches to the professional development of high school English teachers.As a senior high school English teacher with more than twenty years' experience, I believe my research is of practical value. I do hope that my research can be of help to those English teachers who are eager to be successful and are making their every effort to search for a road to their professional development and to becoming expert teachers.
