Formative evaluation refers to frequent, interactive assessments of student progress and understanding to identify students' learning needs and adjust teachers' teaching appropriately. The experiment is to study whether formative evaluation influences learning interests of students who are in vocational schools and improves relationship between teachers and students. In recent years, many English teachers in vocational schools may have found the fact that some students are not interested in English. One of the reasons is that most of them lose confidence in learning English because they usually get low scores in the test of junior high school. In other words, some students were not able to pass the examination most of the time, which makes them lose heart on English learning. The advocacy of formative evaluation is a reform of traditional evaluation systems, and the characteristics of formative evaluation just meet needs of evaluation systems in vocational schools, that is to say, it pays more attention to the development of students and can make students see and understand the process of their improvement instead of emphasizing the test result itself. Teachers using formative evaluation approaches and techniques are better prepared to meet diverse students' needs - through differentiation and adaptation of teaching to improve senses of students' achievement and to make students like English learning more. If the experiment succeeds, it at least gives us confidence to continue to change the situation that some students in vocational schools do not take pleasure in studying English. There are three questionnaires and one plan of formative evaluation in the experiment. We get result of experiment through comparison of data which is from questionnaires before and after carrying out the plan of formative evaluation. There are five parts in the formative evaluation research paper, introduction, literature review, research process, conclusion and summary. In the first part, the purpose and significance of the experiment have been introduced to the readers. In the second part, the paper illustrates the relative theory of experiment, such as formative evaluation and portfolio. In the third part, the paper explains the whole process of the experiment in detail, such as research questions, research method research procedures and so on. In the fourth part, the paper draws the conclusion of the research that formative evaluation can arouse students' learning interests and improve the relationship between teachers and students, and then gives the recommendations for future research. In the last part, the paper summarizes the whole experiment.
