In traditional English teaching method, the teacher-centered classroom activities are still prevailing. At present, teachers accept traditional teaching method, and quite a lot of teachers of senior three are used to having class in a traditional way. The majority of time is used to explain language points, doing endless exercises and attending exams one by one. It takes students a lot of time and energy, resulting in the overburden of the students. However, the result is not satisfying, especially to those who have difficulty in learning English. Although they spend a lot of time learning English, they can not achieve much. This kind of situation makes the students lose interest in English.Based on Krashen's Input theory, the thesis is designed to promotelow score EFL learners' English proficiency through extensive reading. In the study, the students adopt extensive reading as the major learning approach instead of intensive reading characterized with word-by-word explaining. The teacher's task is to instruct students to read various themes and types of English literature, enlighten the original knowledge, enhance language fluency, enlarge vocabulary, promote reading speed and their English achievement.The author conducted the experiment for a year in No 1 middle school, Hebei province. Two groups each consist of 20 students. In the comparison group traditional method was utilized as usual; while in the experimental group, the extensive reading approach was adopted, instructing students read extensively during and after class.
