Understanding and learning from written material is one of the most important skills to possess in modern society. Yet, many of our students flounder and struggle to comprehend informational texts in typical classroom, especially scientific texts. The purpose of this research is to improve students' ability to learn and comprehend material. However, this study focuses on that what readers do with comprehending activities and how these activities interact with the reader's aptitudes.Self-explanation refers to the process of explaining the meaning of text while reading, in order to understand the text. The results showed that readers who explain the text, either spontaneously or when they promoted to do so, and understand more from the text. We call this phenomenon "self-explanation effect". Many studies have found the importance of self-explanation. However, there are still some ambiguous problems on its internal mechanism and its function in typical classroom.This study is composed of two experiments. The first experiment discusses how self- efficacy, the way of prompting self- explanation and the way of providing instructional explanation may influence the middle-school students' ability of reading comprehension. Meanwhile, the difference of self-explanation pattern between good reader and poor reader were compared, in order to identify the good self-explanation pattern. The second experiment, by referring to the merits and demerits of former studies, constructed a self-explanation training pattern.
