English, the world widely used language, is now playing a muchmore important role in the life. With the rapid development of economic and society, people pay special attention to the ability of one's using English. So how to teach and learn English efficiently is the key point people concern about in the rural middle schools, too. It is obviously true that there are so many differences between the rural middle schools and the urban ones in the following: the abilities of the teachers, the knowledge of the students, the purposes of learning English and the condition of English teaching and learning. It is the purpose to choose the rural English research as the topic. The Multiple Intelligences Theory by Gardner, an American psychologist and educationist, the author thinks, can help us to solve some problems and conduct the reform of the English teaching and learning in the rural middle schools. In the essay, the author concludes the achievements received in the middle school's English research in China, and states the purpose as well as significance of the research. Then he tells the methods and the means of this research. The author also introduces the Multiple Intelligences Theory briefly, and emphasizes its characteristics and the influence on how to teach English. The content of the third part is to stress the possibility of applying the theory for English teaching reform in the rural middle schools, In the next part, the author explores the approaches of the English teaching reform in the rural middle schools. Meanwhile, the author points out the problems to be further studied.
